My name is Brendan Sheehan and I am running for the position of Vice president External. I guess I will start by providing you with a little background information about myself. I am a third year science student and have been heavily involved in many aspects of campus life since my first year at UNBSJ. I am currently the Third year rep for the Student Council and I sit on several committees that deal with student issues. For the past two years I have also run the 2 most successful Shinerama campaign ever at UNBSJ.
From an international perspective, international students are being forced to pay tuition fees that are much higher than Canadian students. The difference in fees is greater than can be explained by the money provided to Canadian students by our government. Questions have to be asked as to why, and measures need to be put in place to ensure that all payments are justifiable. Steps have to be taken to lower these fees.
The University currently lacks any form of a health center. We provide our students with health insurance, but this is of little help when students are unable to find a family doctor. International students coming into canada are not able to find a family doctor and are often left waiting long hours in hospital emergency rooms for issues that should take at most an hour. An effective SRC could work on your behalf to have a health center in place as early as next year, with a full time nurse and doctor to serve students.
In closing, I urge all of you to take control of your student council and go on line to vote next week, so that you will get a new SRC that truly represents your views.
